Research Assistant

Position Description

A Research Assistant position is available in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering to support the Peccoud Lab (www.peccoud.org).
We seek an exceptional and innovative student enrolled in a relevant engineering or life science program to fill a Research Assistant. This position will support a research program to develop a new generation of gene delivery vectors using methods from mammalian synthetic biology.  
Students taking this position are likely to get publications from this work.
If successful, this experience could lead to a graduate research project.
 
Pay Range: $15 for undergraduate students - $17/hour for grad students

Required Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a relevant engineering or life science program.
  • Be available at least 10 hours per week throughout the semester.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures with limited supervision.
  • Ability to rapidly learn to use complex data management systems and record-keeping including laboratory information management systems (LIMS), electronic lab notebooks, and databases.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Be available 2 hours per day five days a week
  • Previous lab experience, preferably in a mammalian cell culture laboratory.
  • A genuine interest in Research.
  • Experience working in a BSL II laboratory environment, with aseptic techniques. 

Essential Job Duties

Research (70%)

  • Contribute to the design and execution of experiments.
  • Contribute or lead to the analysis of data generated by experiments.
  • Train and supervise students participating in the research project.
  • Keep laboratory notebooks and other research records.
  • Lead or contribute to the writing of scientific articles.
  • Assist with the development of research proposals.
  • Participate in the activities of the relevant scientific organizations.

Teaching (20%)

  • Assist with teaching graduate-level classes on biomanufacturing and genetic design.
  • Guide journal-club style discussions in class
  • Provide feedback to students on project presentations
  • Host guest lecturers and accompany students to site visits
  • Assist with the grading of student assignments

Communication and outreach (10%)

  • Contribute articles to the research group websites
  • Assist with the management of the group’s social media channels.
  • Work with the CSU communication team to communicate research results to the general public using different media including written articles or videos.
